The area of the little town of Argelès-Gazost is considered to be the cradle of the breed.
   

It is also the location of the annual National Specialty - Nationale d'Elevage - for all four Pyrenean breeds: Berger des Pyrénées (Pyrenean Shepherd), Montagne des Pyrénées (Great Pyrenees), Gos d'Atura Català, and Mâtin des Pyrénées.
